Picture Description

Haliewell (11th century); Halywell (13th century); Holliwell cum Needingworth (17th century); Nidingworth (13th century.); Niddyngworth (14th century) and Holywell-cum-Needingworth (Modern)

The original village of Holywell developed from Roman times onwards as a ring village on the banks of the River Great Ouse at a crossing place to the village of Over. Being slightly off the beaten track additional houses were built where the lane to the village joins with the main road between St Ives and Earith. Because of the additional trade resulting from this new location the number of houses in the new village quickly exceeded that of Holywell and the new daughter village of Needingworth was born.

Holywell Croft is a modern building (1910) standing on the site of some buildings connected with the old religious houses, on one parish map the one of the gardens is still called the Abbot’s Garden. The village of Holywell is of quite an old world character, and doubtless in the time of Hereward the Wake and prior to the opening of the railway, occupied an important place on the river Ouse, which was the high waterway from Lynn to the Midland Counties. The neighbourhood is full of antiquarian interest, and close at hand is Moynes Hall, which probably had some connection with Sir William le Moygne, who possessed Sawtry in 1404. There are still portions of what might have been a moat round the hall.

Holywell-cum-Needingworth is one of the parishes of the District of Huntingdonshire, whose administrative centre is Huntingdon, the other principle towns being St Ives home of the Chapel on the Bridge, St Neots the largest town in the County of Cambridgeshire and Ramsey site of the former Abbey.
